NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished the three-round, 16-team LSU Tiger Golf Classic in 11th place, logging a 929 (+65). The event was played at the par-72, 6,251-yard University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
The Sooners saved their best round for last, firing a 306 (+18) on Sunday. Tournament host and No. 7-ranked LSU finished atop the leaderboard at 879 (+15). No. 12 Mississippi State recorded an 884 (+20) in the tournament to finish in second while TCU finished in third place with an 895 (+31).
OU's Hannah Wood paced the Sooners, sharing 19th place out of 89 competitors with a three-round 226 (+10). The freshman shot a 79 (+7) in Sunday's round en route to her fifth top-20 showing in seven career events.
Fellow freshman Valerie Tanguay logged OU's best third-round score, registering five birdies on her way to a 73 (+1). Tanguay, who shot a three-round 228 (+12), tied for 23rd place, her best collegiate finish.
Ana Ruiz, another freshman, carded a 74 (+2) in Sunday's round and finished the tournament tied for 30th place at 231 (+15).
OU sophomore Alexandra Kaui finished in 76th place with a 244 (+28) after recording an 80 (+8) in the final round of competition. Sophomore Maggie Neece shot an 81 (+9) Sunday and finished in 86th place with a 258 (+42).
Sixth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she was happy with how her team progressed.
“We definitely played better as the weekend went on,” Drouin-Luttrell explained. “Our short games were better as a whole and we need to continue practicing hard. We have a few more weeks to go and we need to work hard on our games.”
The Sooners will return to the course Saturday, April 4, when they will compete in a match-play event against Oklahoma State at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman.
