NORMAN, Okla. – For the second straight season, the Oklahoma baseball team's fitted hats will feel a little loose at the beginning of April. On Wednesday, April 1, the Sooners will once again “Shave for the Brave” in an effort to fight childhood cancer. The players and coaches will all shave their heads, all while raising funds for the cause, at 5:00 pm at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The event is open to the public and the media.
The funds raised will be split between the Vs. Cancer Foundation and the OU Children's Medical Center. Oklahoma baseball has a team goal to raise $20,000. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Sooners have reached $11,871 in donations, which ranks fourth among 62 teams in the nation participating in Shave for the Brave.
Last season, Oklahoma shattered its goal of $20,000 by surpassing $29,000 and was ranked first in the country in donations on the day of its Shave for the Brave event.
The Vs. Cancer Foundation was founded by Chase Jones, a former University of North Carolina baseball player, who was diagnosed with Stage IV brain cancer as a college freshman at the age of 18. Since beating cancer, Jones has worked with multiple childhood cancer organizations before establishing the Vs. Cancer Foundation in 2012.
