NORMAN — The No. 17 Oklahoma men's golf team claimed fifth place at the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga., with an 851 (-13). The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at the 7,073-yard, par-72 Great Waters Golf Club at Reynolds Plantation.
In Sunday's final round, OU tallied a 291 (+3). The Sooners opened the round strong, finding themselves tied for first at the turn, but struggled the rest of the way. It was OU's seventh top-five showing in eight events this season.
The 15-team field featured nine squads ranked within the top 50 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll. No. 3 Texas topped the leaderboard with a 24-under-par 840, while No. 32 Georgia took second at 19 under par. Co-host and No. 28th-ranked Kennesaw State and No. 19 North Carolina tied for third with scores of 847 (-17). Georgia's Lee McCoy was the individual winner with a 202 (-14).
Three Sooners finished within the top 20, including seniors Michael Gellerman and Charlie Saxon and freshman Grant Hirschman.
Gellerman was OU's highest placer, sharing eighth with a 5-under-par 211. It marks Gellerman's fourth top-10 finish of his senior campaign. For the final 18 holes, Gellerman recorded a 74 (+2) to go with his 69 (-3) and 68 (-4) from Saturday. Gellerman pocketed four birdies on Sunday and 12 total for the tournament.
With scores of 214 (-2), Hirschman and Saxon tied for 17th place. Hirschman recorded a 1-under-par 71 to conclude the weekend, while Saxon posted a 74 (+2). The top-20 finishes were the second straight for both Sooners and the fourth and second of the season for Hirschman and Saxon, respectively.
Junior Luke Kwon placed 25th with a 216 (E) after shooting an even-par 72 in the final round, while sophomore Max McGreevy posted a 74 (+2) on Sunday to finish the tournament in a tie for 30th place with a 217 (+1).
Competing as individuals and unattached from team scoring were freshman Rylee Reintertson and junior Beau Titsworth. Reinertson, in his second collegiate event, tied for 30th with a 1-over 217, and Saxon shared 56th with a 221 (+5). Reinertson shot a 79 (+5) in the final round, while Titsworth recorded a 77 (+5).
"We played pretty solid all day and just made a few bad swings at the wrong time today that cost us," said sixth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl. "Overall I am pleased by the week. We had a chance to win, which is the goal each week we play. The more we put ourselves in that position, the better off we will be."
Up next, the Sooners will compete at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas, on Saturday, April 4, and Sunday, April 5.
