NORMAN — The No. 12 seed Oklahoma men's golf team finished its season on Sunday at the 2015 NCAA Championships. The tournament was played at the 7,483-yard, par-72 Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
The Sooners tallied a 299 (+11) on Sunday, bringing their three-round total to 910 (+46). OU tied for 28th place.
Third-round play was suspended due to lightning with 13 groups still on the course, so the round concluded Monday morning.
The top 15 teams from the first 54 holes of stroke play advanced to play another round on Monday. From there, the top eight squads will advance to the match play portion of the event.
"This just wasn't our week," sixth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "Our guys had a tough time each day, and we could never really get going."
Sophomore Max McGreevy led the Sooners, tying for 51st place. McGreevy shot a final-round 72 (E) and a 6-over-par 222 for the event. On Sunday, McGreevy carded three birdies in a four-hole stretch from holes No. 13-16.
With a 232 (+16), Grant Hirschman tied for 113th place. The freshman closed his NCAA Championships debut with a 4-over-par 76.
Junior Beau Titsworth shot a 75 (+3) for the final 18 holes. He tied for 123rd place with a score of 233 (+17). In the final round, he tallied birdies on holes No. 6, 7 and 8.
Sunday's round marked the end of the collegiate careers of seniors Michael Gellerman and Charlie Saxon, who tied for 126th place with scores of 234 (+18). Gellerman tallied a 2-over-par 74 for the final round, pocketing four birdies, while Saxon shot an 80 (+8).
OU made its fifth straight NCAA Championships appearance this season is one of just six teams to reach the national tournament in each of the past five years, joining Georgia, Illinois, Texas, UCLA and USC.
Hybl said that even though it is disappointing to see the season end, he is proud of the way his squad performed throughout the season.
"We had a phenomenal year and one of the best in our school history," Hybl said. "It's always frustrating finishing poorly, but I don't want to take away from our year as a whole. We won three times this year, including a postseason regional, and we made another big step in our program this season. I am proud of our guys and their effort this year, and I am especially proud of our seniors that left a great legacy here at OU and our golf program."
