HONOLULU – The University of Oklahoma baseball team was narrowly defeated at Hawai'i Friday night by a score of 2-1 at Les Murakami Stadium. The Sooners fell to 13-8 on the year, while the Rainbow Warriors improved to 7-11.
Runs were hard to come by for either side. Hawai'i struck first with a run in the bottom of the second. Designated hitter Alex Sawelson led off the frame with a single and eventually scored from third on a sacrifice-fly to center by catcher Chayce Ka'aua.
Oklahoma would tie the game in the fourth. Junior second baseman Kolbey Carpenter (Waco, Texas) hit a one-out double down the right field line and went to third as the ball was kicked around in the corner. He came home on a RBI-groundout from redshirt-senior DH Robert Tasin (Klein, Texas).
The game did not remain tied for long as the deciding-run was scored by the Warriors in the bottom half of the fourth. Ka'aua walked and after going first-to-third on a single scored easily on a sinking-double to left by third baseman JJ Kitaoka. Kitaoka and Sawelson each finished with two-hit nights.
Right-hander Tyler Brashears (3-2) pitched seven innings in the win for Hawai'i. He scattered five hits and two walks, while giving up just the one run and striking out six.
For the Sooners, sophomore RHP Alec Hansen (Loveland, Colo.) went four innings and struck out five. He gave up both UH runs and took the loss to drop to 2-2 on the season as he gave up five hits and four walks.
Junior right-hander Keaton Hernandez (Palm Springs, Calif.) and Tasin combined to throw four innings of shutout-relief.
Game three of the series is scheduled for tomorrow night at 11:35 pm CT.
