NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished Friday's first round of the Clover Cup in third place by shooting a 297 (+9). The 15-team tournament is being played at the par-72, 6,184-yard Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
The Sooners, who play four freshmen in their lineup, finished the round just two strokes behind tournament leader and No. 27-ranked Arizona State (+7). No. 37 Notre Dame is in second place at +8 and Florida International finished the day in fourth place at 306 (+18). East Carolina rounded out the top five teams with a 307 (+19).
OU freshman Hannah Wood paced the Sooners and is tied for first place out of 89 competitors after logging a 69 (-3). Wood counteracted two bogeys with two birdies in the front nine and finished with three birdies in the last five holes to record the fourth sub-70 round of her career.
Sooner Ana Ruiz is tied for 10th place with a 74. The freshman was at 4-over through seven holes but played the last 11 at par-or-better to end the round at +2.
Sophomore Alexandra Kaui shot a 75 (+3) and is tied for 17th place. Kaui pocketed three birdies in Friday's round.
OU's Rylee Pedigo shares 41st place at +7, and fellow freshman Valerie Tanguay is tied for 48th with an 80 (+8).
OU's Maggie Neece and Amanda Johnson are playing as individuals in the tournament and are unattached from team scoring. Neece, a sophomore, registered four birdies on the day and is tied for seventh place with a 73 (+1). Johnson finished the round at 101 (+29) and is in 88th place.
Sixth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell was excited to see how her team has progressed in the spring season.
“We played really well on our last five holes, and we need to take that into tomorrow's round,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “We're right where we want to be. Hannah (Wood) played solid again today. She has just been making it seem so easy out there.”
