Sooners Finish Strong at Neutral Site Match

EUGENE, Ore. – The 34th-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team won a back-and-forth match against the Portland Pilots Saturday by a score of 4-3 to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Portland took command early with a doubles win to take the first point, before the Sooners answered back with the first two singles wins.
“In doubles, we were too tentative,” said OU head coach Dave Mullins. “We did not adapt well to the speed of the courts or Portland's aggressive play.”
In singles, sophomore Morgan Chumney finished first, defeating Jelena Lazerevic 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Freshman Christiana Brigante followed with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Tori Troesch at the No. 6 position.
Portland would take the next two points courtesy of ITA ranked players Lucia Butkovska at the No. 1 position (No. 60) and Maja Mladenovic (No. 104) at the No. 2 position.
Butkovska handed freshman Lily Miyazaki her first loss of the season by a score of 6-2, 7-5. Mladenovic defeated freshman Simran Sethi in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
“We always knew it was going to be a tough day at one and two,” said Mullins. “After losing the doubles point we were hopeful we could at least split those points.”
Facing a 3-2 deficit, senior Abbi Melrose and junior Zita Engbroks answered the call and helped the Sooners clinch their fourth victory of the season.
Melrose defeated Sophie van den Aarssen 7-5, 6-4, to force the tie. Engbroks rebounded after losing her first set to defeat Saroop Dhatt 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 and seal the deal for Oklahoma.
“We did not play particularly well as a team today, but competed very well at a few key spots which got us through in the end,” said Mullins.
The Sooners finish the second half of the back-to-back duals Sunday at noon against the Oregon Ducks at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Ore.
