Chumney Dominates During Sooners Victory

EUGENE, Ore. -- The 34th-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team defeated the Oregon Ducks 6-1 Sunday at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Ore., to improve to 5-1 on the season. It was their second win in as many days.
The Sooners started fast out of the gates with dominating wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Junior Zita Engbroks and freshman Christiana Brigante won the first four points at No. 3 en route to a 6-1 victory over Kadie Hueffner and Lina Akesson. Sophomore Morgan Chumney and junior Emma Devine clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita.
In singles, Chumney continued her outstanding play by dismantling Nicole Long 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 3 position to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead.
“Everyone contributed this weekend but Morgan was our MVP today and looked outstanding from start to finish,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “She served extremely well and was relentless with her forehand.”
Freshmen Christie Brigante and Simran Sethi stepped up to get the Sooners two more wins and seal the victory. Brigante defeated Kadie Hueffner at No. 6 (6-4, 6-2) before Sethi defeated Alyssa Tobita 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2.
Freshman Lily Miyazaki improved to 5-1 on the season at No. 1 singles after defeating Nia Rose 6-3, 7-6.
“Simran and Christie did a nice job of getting us to four today and they look better with each performance,” said Mullins. “Overall, it was a good weekend for us and exactly what this young team needed on the road.”

The Sooners return home for back-to-back matches, Feb. 14-15 at the Headington Family Tennis Center. Oklahoma hosts Wichita State Saturday and Tulsa Sunday. Wichita State and Tulsa are ranked 43rd and 25th, respectively.
