NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine continues his whirlwind postseason banquet circuit on Saturday evening as he will accept the 2014 Freshman of the Year Award from the Touchdown Club of Columbus. Perine is the second Oklahoma player to earn this distinction, joining Adrian Peterson who received the honor following the 2004 campaign.
The 60th Touchdown Club of Columbus Awards mark the second straight weekend awards event for the Big 12's leading rusher. Last week, he was at the Herberger Theatre in Phoenix where he received an ESPN Sport Science Newton Award for his FBS-record 427-yard rushing performance last season against Kansas. Perine was also a finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award based on his record-setting rookie campaign.
Perine prepped at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, Texas. He led the Big 12 in rushing in 2014, totaling 1,713 yards, which placed him fifth on the OU all-time single-season rushing chart. The freshman also scored 21 touchdowns, a Big 12 record for rushing touchdowns in a season by a freshman. Perine received All-Big 12 First Team honors from both the conference's coaches and AP. He was also named the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and AP Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year.
