HONOLULU, Hawaii – Lauren Chamberlain continued her ascent towards the home run crown and Paige Parker dominated in her pitching debut as No. 4/3 Oklahoma (2-0) routed St. Mary's (1-2), 17-0, in five innings Friday afternoon at the Oceanic Time Warner Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Chamberlain homered twice and tied a career high with seven runs batted in as she went 2-3 with two walks and four runs scored. She hit a three-run homer in the third inning and added the fourth grand slam of her career an inning later. It was the 15th multi-homer game of her career.
She now has a team-best three home runs on the year and 75 in her career. Her career total has her tied with Ball State's Jennifer Gilbert (2011-14) for eighth on the all-time list and just 15 away from tying the all-time Division I home run record of 90 set by UCLA's Stacey Nuveman, whose career spanned from 1997-02.
Chamberlain and the rest of the Sooners combined for the team's highest run total since an 18-3, five-inning win over Liberty on March 7, 2014.
It all came in support of Parker, the three-time Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year, who made her first appearance in the circle for OU. She faced just two batters over the minimum and didn't allow a hit until a leadoff double in the fourth that bounced out of the glove of a leaping Nicole Pendley in center field.
Parker finished with eight strikeouts in five innings of work and allowed just one hit and one walk. She needed only 57 pitches to post the Sooners' first shutout since May 4 of last year against Texas Tech (13-0 in five innings).
Oklahoma wasted little time against the Gaels, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Parker helped her own cause by hitting a two-run, bases-loaded single and junior Whitney Ellis added a sacrifice fly.
After an RBI single by senior Shelby Pendley in the second, Oklahoma broke the game open in the third. Freshman Kelsey Arnold collected the first hit of her career with an RBI single and Chamberlain connected two batters later with a three-run blast to make the lead 8-0 for the Sooners.
A five-run fourth inning was highlighted by an additional RBI single by Arnold and Chamberlain's grand slam.
OU collected four more runs in the fifth, the first of which came from sophomore Macey Hatfield, who hit a pinch-hit home run. It was her second career long-ball.
Nicole Pendley added a run-scoring single after junior Tori Nirschl tallied her first hit as a Sooner, which was a double. After a walk to Chamberlain, Shelby Pendley cleared the bases with a two-run double.
