NORMAN, Okla. – A stretch of cold weather in Oklahoma sends the Sooner baseball team on the road for a four-game home series against BYU at Cashman Field, home of the New York Mets' Triple-A affiliate the Las Vegas 51s. The action gets underway Thursday at 3:00 pm CT.
Oklahoma finished off a challenging stretch of 10 games in 10 days with a 6-4 record and is riding a three-game win streak coming out of the Big 12/Pac-12 Challenge. Junior Kolbey Carpenter, the National and Big 12 Player of the Week, has homered in three of the last four games and has totaled four on the year, while batting a team-leading .400 with a .829 slugging percentage. Junior center fielder Craig Aikin returned to the lead-off spot this past weekend. He is hitting .316 with a team-high 12 runs scored and three stolen bases. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jake Elliott moved to 2-0 on the season with his second seven-inning start of the year on Friday. He holds a 0.64 earned run average and has held opponents to a .104 batting average. At the back-end of the OU bullpen, RHP Sheldon Neuse and LHP Jacob Evans each notched their first save over the weekend.
Scouting the Cougars
BYU is 1-7 on the season, with its lone win coming this past weekend during a four-game set with Nebraska in Peoria, Ariz. Shortstop Hayden Nielsen leads the Cougars with a .364 batting average. Catcher Colton Shaver has scored a team-high five runs, while hitting .292. Righty Kolton Mahoney has struck out a team-best 11 hitters through two starts with a 4.91 ERA.

The Sooner pitching staff leads the Big 12 with 85 strikeouts; averaging 8.5 per game. Sophomore right-hander Alec Hansen struck out 12 vs. Oregon State on Saturday and leads the league with 16. Tied for second in the Big 12 is redshirt-senior RHP Robert Tasin with 13 in two starts and one relief appearance. Elliott ranks third on the team and tied for fifth in the league with 11.

Oklahoma is well on its way to surpassing its 30-home run total from 2014. Through 10 games, the Sooners have gone yard eight times, including a team-leading four from Carpenter. Three of his home runs have come on the road after all three homers he hit in 2014 came away from L. Dale Mitchell Park. Sophomore first baseman Austin O'Brien is second on the team with two jacks; both coming at home.
