Sooners Ride Win Streak into Big 12 Play

Sooners Ride Win Streak into Big 12 Play

February 20, 2015 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN, Okla. – The 33rd-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team won its fifth straight match and improved to 8-1 on the season by defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes 4-0 in Iowa City, Iowa Friday.

The Sooners responded well to Iowa's advances in order to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. Oklahoma won the first match at No. 3, but Iowa came right back to win the second before OU clinched the tiebreaking third match.

At No. 2 doubles, the freshmen duo of Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi lost the first two points before winning six of the next seven to win 6-3 over Morven McCulloch and Zoe Douglas and clinch the point.

Freshman Christiana Brigante and junior Zita Engbroks opened up a 3-0 lead before surrendering the next three. The No. 3 duo responded with a 6-4 win over Katie Zordani and Annette Dohanics.

“Lily and Simran played more aggressively towards the end of their doubles which helped them close it out comfortably,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “Zita and Christie regained focus after losing a 3-0 lead. Overall, we were the better team but it was definitely a lethargic performance by us today.”

In singles, Miyazaki improved to 8-1 on the season at the No. 1 position. She overcame a 3-1 deficit in the first set to hand Shelby Talcott her first loss of the season 6-3, 6-1.

Senior Abbi Melrose gave the Sooners their third point in a row by controlling her match throughout en route to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Katie Zordani.

Engbroks proceeded to clinch the match for the Sooners by defeating Ellen Silver at the No. 5 position 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Engbroks improved to 8-1 on the season and her fifth win in a row overall.

“Zita has been playing great and can definitely play even better with just a little more focus from start to finish,” said Mullins. “We have no doubt she will continue to progress in this area.”

All matches still in play were suspended once Engbroks clinched the match. Sophomore Morgan Chumney had won the first set at No. 3, but conceded the second and was in a close third set with a 4-3 deficit to Anastasia Reimchen. Sethi had rebounded from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to tie it at 6-6 with Morven McCulloch. Brigante split her first two sets at No. 6 with Zoe Douglas and was down 1-0 in the third set.
