NORMAN, Okla. – The 33rd-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team opened Big 12 Conference play with a 4-2 win over Iowa State Sunday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center in Ames, Iowa. The Sooners improved to 9-1 overall and recorded their sixth consecutive victory. Iowa State falls to 2-3 on the season.
In doubles, freshman Christiana Brigante and junior Zita Engbroks improved to 4-2 at No. 3 with a 6-2 win over Meghan Cassens and Natalie Phippen.
After Iowa State's Samantha Budai and Ksenia Pronina took a 6-4 win at the No. 1 position over sophomore Morgan Chumney and junior Emma Devine, the freshmen duo of Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Caroline Andersen and Alejandra Galvis at No. 2 doubles.
Engbroks extended her singles win streak to six in dominant fashion by defeating Caroline Andersen 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. She is 9-1 overall in singles play.
“Zita and Christie remained extremely focused and disciplined throughout their matches today both in singles and doubles,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “It was good to see them get off the court so quickly.”
Iowa State responded as Morgan Chumney fell at the No. 3 position to Meghan Cassens 6-3, 6-1. Senior Abbi Melrose won the No. 4 position to extend the lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alejandra Galvis.
Iowa State pulled to within 3-2 after a rare loss at No. 1 singles for Miyazaki. She was defeated by Samantha Budai 7-6, 6-4, dropping just her second singles match of the season.
Despite a late start at No. 6 due to just five available courts, Brigante made quick work of her opponent and was able to clinch the match for the Sooners with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Natalie Phippen. Brigante improved to 7-2 overall with the win.
“We definitely got out competed by Iowa State today, but we still managed to get four points and come away with a victory,” said Mullins. “We look forward to getting back to our home courts next weekend to finish off what has been a great month.”
