Chamberlain Wins Big 12 Player of the Week

February 17, 2015 | Softball

NORMAN -- Senior Lauren Chamberlain earned her second Big 12 Player of the Week award of the season as she continued her torrid start to the 2015 campaign at the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend.

In helping the No. 4/3 Sooners go 4-1, Chamberlain hit .533 (8-15), with seven runs scored, eight hits, three home runs, nine runs batted in and five walks. She slugged 1.133 and got on base at a clip of .650.

Against Boston, Chamberlain drove in a game-high four runs as she went 2-3 at the plate with three runs scored and a walk. After an RBI single in the third inning, Chamberlain hit a three-run homer in the fourth. Later in the day in an 8-7 win over No. 15/15 Washington, Chamberlain drove in a team-high three runs as she went 3-4 at the plate, including a solo home run, with two runs scored.

After scoring a run and hitting an RBI single in a win over Illinois State, Chamberlain was instrumental in OU's win at No. 21/21 Arizona State. Her deep home run to lead off the sixth inning tied the game at 1-1 and sparked a four-run rally for OU in a 5-1 win. It was the 78th homer of her career to move within 12 of the all-time record.

The award is the second of the season for Chamberlain and the seventh of her career, which ties former Sooner Heather Scaglione (2002-05) for the most Big 12 Player of the Week honors in school history.

In addition, it is just the sixth time in Big 12 history, and second time in OU annals, that a student-athlete was named Big 12 Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks. The only other Sooners to do it was Scaglione on April 27 and May 4 of 2004.

Chamberlain's win also marks the first time Oklahoma won back-to-back Player of the Week honors as a team since 2013, when it won three straight on April 16 (Shelby Pendley), April 23 (Brianna Turang) and April 30 (Pendley).

On the season, Chamberlain leads Oklahoma in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.519), runs (16), hits (14), home runs (6), RBI (21), slugging (1.259), walks (14) and on-base percentage (.683).
