NORMAN – The No. 7 University of Oklahoma wrestling team fell to in-state rival and No. 9 Oklahoma State by a 37-3 mark Sunday afternoon in a Bedlam matchup inside McCasland Field House.
“The great thing about this sport is that you can make those adjustments. One dual meet doesn't dictate your whole season. We'll be back to making our adjustments tomorrow, making sure that we're cleaning up things," OU Head Coach Mark Cody said. "I can say technically there are things that the guys didn't do that we work on all the time, but it didn't look like they had the juice to even do it to me. It couldn't have been a better situation for us. A great crowd, everybody came out to watch, instead of that affecting them in a positive way, I think maybe that got to them.”
The Sooners' lone win came at 197 pounds as redshirt junior Brad Johnson downed OSU junior Austin Schafer by decision, 8-6. Schafer struck first in the bout with a takedown, but Johnson responded with an escape and garnered a penalty point after Schafer received two stalling calls to sit tied at 2-2 after the first frame. Johnson then recorded two takedowns, an escape and another penalty point between the final two frames to secure the win.
In the 125-pound bout, OU's No. 15 Ryan Millhof took on No. 5 Eddie Klimara. The match was close throughout, but Klimara was able to hold off Millhof for the 5-3 victory, putting the Cowboys on the board first.
OSU went on to win the next seven matches. At 133 pounds, OSU freshman Kaid Brock earned the fall in 42 seconds against redshirt senior Cody Brewer, and No. 1 Dean Heil defeated OU sophomore Trae Blackwell by major decision, 13-3, at 141 pounds.
OU freshman Davion Jeffries, ranked No. 16, dropped a 10-2 major decision to redshirt freshman Jonce Blaylock at 149 pounds, while OSU redshirt freshman Chance Marsteller added a 16-1 technical fall in 6:30 of redshirt freshman Brock Wingbermuehle.
No. 11 Clark Glass fell to the Cowboys' top-ranked Alex Dieringer, 13-4 (165 pounds), No. 18 Matt Reed dropped a 9-3 decision to No. 2 Kyle Crutchmer (174 pounds) and sophomore Andrew Dixon lost by an 18-2 technical fall to No. 18 Nolan Boyd (184 pounds).
The dual closed with a heavyweight matchup between No. 7 Ross Larson and No. 4 Austin Marsden, with Marsden winning by a 6-1 decision.
The Sooners are back in action at noon CT on Sunday, Dec. 20, when they welcome Lehigh to McCasland Field House.
