NORMAN – The No. 8 OU wrestling team fell to No. 13 Lehigh, 30-7, Sunday afternoon in McCasland Field House. With the loss, OU moved to 5-2 on the season.
“I feel like we were holding each other accountable early in the season but at this point we aren't doing that in our performances," OU Head Coach Mark Cody said. "Lehigh is a quality team. They've been ranked as high as fifth at the start of the season and that's why I wanted to bring them in to make the schedule as tough as we could. There are some things we need to figure out at this point and our staff knows how to get these guys ready, but when we go out and don't execute then they put themselves in tough situations. It's easier to make the adjustments we need to make when they are out there fighting, but there are too many of them that didn't fight as hard as we expected, so it's hard to figure out those adjustments.”
Two Sooners registered two wins in the contest in No. 3 Cody Brewer (133 pounds) and No. 17 Matt Reed (174 pounds).
Brewer posted the only bonus-point victory of the night for the Sooners with a 14-5 major decision over No. 17 Mason Beckman. The senior registered five takedowns in the bout and tacked on 4:12 of riding time to improve to 10-2 on the season.
At 174 pounds, Lehigh's Gordon Wolfe struck first with an early takedown, but Reed responded with a reversal and two 2-point nearfalls en route to a 7-5 decision of Wolfe. The redshirt junior moves to 8-3 on the year.
Sophomore Ryan Millhof started off the dual at 125, dropping a 6-2 decision to No. 16 Darian Cruz. At 141 pounds, Lehigh's Randy Cruz, ranked No. 13 nationally, defeated Trae Blackwell by an 8-0 major decision.
In a close 149-pound matchup, the Mountain Hawks' Laike Gardner beat Davion Jeffries in a 6-5 decision, and No. 10 Mitch Minotti recorded a fall over OU's Shayne Tucker in 6:04 at 157 pounds.
The Sooners' Clark Glass lost to Ryan Preisch, 5-2 (165 pounds), Andrew Dixon fell to No. 4 Nathaniel Brown by a 21-5 technical fall in 6:10 (184 pounds) and Brad Johnson dropped a 6-4 decision to Ben Haas (197 pounds).
The dual closed with a heavyweight matchup between No. 6 Ross Larson and No. 17 Max Wessel, with Wessell winning by a 10-6 decision.
The Sooners return to action Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill., for Midlands.
