NORMAN, Okla. – It's “Fan Appreciation Day” at McCasland Field House once again as Oklahoma volleyball returns home Saturday, November 7. The Sooners take on No. 10 Kansas at 12:00 pm ahead of the OU football game against Iowa State.
Oklahoma lost its season series with Iowa State in a four-set match on Saturday to drop to 8-13 overall and 2-7 in the Big 12.. In the middle, junior Micaela Spann and sophomore Marion Hazelwood lead the Sooner attack with hitting percentages of .325 and .311, respectively. Spann averages a team-best 1.06 blocks to go with 2.15 kills per set, while Hazelwood averages 1.01 blocks and owns a .345 attack rate in conference play. Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward averages a team-high 3.00 kills per set. She led OU with 12 kills in a recent win over Texas Tech; marking the eighth time she has posted the team-high in a match and fourth in Big 12 play. Senior setter Julia Doyle manages the Sooner offense to the tune of 7.50 assists to go with 1.94 digs per set.
Kansas has dropped to No. 7 in the AVCA Top-25 with its first loss of the season coming at No. 2 Texas (Oct. 23). The Jayhawks have bounced back with wins over Iowa State and Baylor to lift their record to 21-1 and 9-1. KU is hitting .312 as a team; led by Kelsie Payne at .400 with a 4.10 kills per set average. Tayler Soucie leads the defense at 1.21 blocks per set to go with 2.12 kills, which ranks fourth on the team. Setter Ainise Havili is first in the Big 12 with a 12.12 assists per set average. She adds 2.90 digs per set, which is second to libero Cassie Wait at 4.72.
No. 7 Kansas swept Oklahoma in Lawrence on October 21 by scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-18. Payne tallied 15 kills and hit .538 as the Jayhawks outhit the Sooners, .355-.153. Ward led the OU attack with 14 kills and a .258 attack rate to go with six digs. Havili dished out 37 assists and Wait picked up 23 digs. Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner fell just shy of a double-double effort with eight kills and nine digs.
Oklahoma leads the all-time series, 48-34. Kansas swept the season series in 2012 and won its third in a row against the Sooners in Lawrence on October 9, 2013. OU ended that streak with a 3-1 win at home on November 20, 2013 for its first win over the Jayhawks since sweeping the season series in 2011. The series started with a 2-0 OU win in 1976. The last two times the two teams have met in Norman with Kansas ranked, Oklahoma was against No. 23 KU in 2014 and No. 21 KU in 2013.
The Sooners are winless in six tries against ranked opponents this season, including 0-5 against the Top-10. Under head coach Santiago Restrepo, Oklahoma owns a 21-78 (.212) record against ranked teams. Over a stretch of six NCAA Tournament seasons from 2009-14, the Sooners went 15-34 (.306) vs. ranked teams. After a 0-19 record in his first two seasons at Oklahoma, Restrepo and the Sooners are 21-59 (.263) against teams in the Top-25. OU's last win over a ranked opponent was at No. 2 Texas (10/25/14).
Sophomore defensive specialist Rachel Manriquez transferred to OU from Iowa State for the 2015 spring semester. The one-time Cyclone has appeared in 68 of a possible 84 sets this season, including six starts at libero. In those six matches, Manriquez averaged 3.67 digs per set to go with 12 assists and three service aces. Against her former team, she posted a season-high 19 digs on October 31.
