NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma volleyball is on the road for the final time in 2015. The Sooners are in Waco, Texas to take on Baylor Sunday, November 15 at 2:00 pm.
Oklahoma enters the weekend at 8-15 overall and 2-9 in the Big 12. The Sooners have dropped three in a row after a five-set defeat at Kansas State on Wednesday night. Junior middle blocker Micaela Spann hits at a team-high .322 with 2.23 kills and 1.00 blocks per set. Sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood is second on the team at .317, including a .348 mark in Big 12 play, while averaging 1.99 kills and a team-high 1.08 blocks per set. Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward leads the Sooners in kills and digs per set at 2.95 and 2.67, respectively. Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner is second with 2.56 kills and third with 2.41 digs per sets. Senior outside hitter Kierra Holst is third on OU averaging 2.47 kills per set, including 2.57 against Big 12 opponents. As a team, the Sooners hold a narrow advantage over opponents in hitting percentage at .240 vs. .233.
After an 11-2 start to the season, Baylor is now 16-10 overall and 4-8 in the Big 12 under first-year head coach Ryan McGuyre. The Bears opened November with wins over Texas Tech and West Virginia before getting swept at home against TCU on Wednesday. Andie Malloy leads Baylor with 2.91 kills per set followed by Katie Staiger at 2.79. Defensively, Malloy adds 2.80 digs and 0.72 blocks per set. Libero Jana Brusek leads the defense with an average of 3.45 digs per set. The Bears own a 9-4 record on the home court with all four losses coming to Big 12 foes.
Oklahoma notched its first Big 12 win of the season in a 3-1 victory over Baylor on October 3 to end a three-match slide. The Sooners took the match; 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-14. Spann hit a team-high .583 on eight kills and just one error in 12 attempts. She matched her career-high in blocks with nine as OU posted 14.0 as a team. Malloy posted a match-high 15 kills with 12 digs for BU, while Holst and Madison Drescher led the Sooners with 12 kills each.
The Sooners own the all-time series against the Bears, 38-15. Oklahoma has won 12 of the last 13 matches dating back to 2008, with Baylor's lone win during that stretch coming in 2011 in Norman. The Bears won the first two matches of the series in 1976 and 1977, but the Sooners then rattled off the series' longest winning streak of eight matches from 1979-89.
Ward and Gardiner lead Oklahoma with nine double-doubles on the season, which is good enough for fourth most in the Big 12. As a team, the Sooners are second in the conference with 29 total double-doubles. Kansas State leads the league with 39 as a team. Oklahoma is first in the league with the most players to record a double-double at seven.
The final week of the regular season sees Oklahoma play at home four times in seven days around Thanksgiving. The Sooners host TCU on Saturday, November 21 before back-to-back matches against West Virginia. OU and WVU play match one, which was originally scheduled for October 24 in Morgantown, on Tuesday, November 24. Match two between the two sides is a day later on Wednesday, November 25. Finally, the regular season comes to a close against Texas on Friday, November 27 at 3:00 pm. Admission to the TCU match and the first West Virginia match will be free.
