NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team heads to Fort Worth to take on TCU Wednesday night for a chance to even its record. The Sooners and Horned Frogs take the floor for an 8:00 pm start.
Oklahoma is 7-8 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12 after snapping a three-match slide with a four-set win over Baylor on Saturday night. Junior middle blocker Micaela Spann continues her dominant play on both sides of the net as she leads the Sooners with a .392 attack rate and 1.24 blocks per set. Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward leads the attack at 3.06 kills per set to go with 2.12 digs per set and five double-doubles. Senior libero Taylor Migliazzo leads the defense with 2.98 digs per set. As a team, Oklahoma is hitting .260, which ranks 32nd in the nation, while holding opponents to a .215 attack rate.
TCU is off to a 12-4 start overall and 2-2 in the Big 12 under first-year head coach Jill Kramer. Outside hitter Ashley Smith averages a team-high 2.98 kills per set on a .279 attack rate to go with 2.84 digs per set. Middle blocker Regan McGuire leads the Big 12 in blocks at 1.53 per set, while hitting .302. Setters Alexia Heist and Kaylee Smith hold an equal share of the offense at 5.29 assists, each.
No. 24 Oklahoma went to Forth Worth on November 5, 2014 and suffered a five-set setback. Kierra Holst led the Sooners with 22 kills, one shy of her then-career-high. Smith led all players with 20 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double effort. Julia Doyle and Heist matched for the lead in assists at 54.
The Horned Frogs took the first match played between the two squads, 3-1, in 2004. The Sooners then went unbeaten in each of the next nine before TCU won at home, 3-2, in 2014. All-time, OU leads the series, 9-2, including a 4-1 mark at home.
Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner leads Oklahoma with six double-doubles on the season, which is good enough for fourth most in the Big 12. As a team, the Sooners are second in the conference with 16 total double-doubles. Kansas State leads the league with 27 as a team. Oklahoma is tied with TCU for having the most players record a double-double at five.
Outside hitter Alyssa Enneking was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week (Sept. 14) after hitting .291 with a 2.67 kills per set average at the Borderland Invitational. She started all three matches after appearing in just one set through the Sooners' first six matches of the season. Outside hitter Madison Drescher earned Rookie of the Week (Oct. 5) after hitting .385 with 2.38 kills and 1.25 blocks per set in a pair of Big 12 matches. Drescher and Enneking are the first rookie duo at OU to earn the honor in the same season. Last season, Oklahoma claimed five weekly awards with Marion Hazelwood earning the team's only rookie award. Julia Doyle (2012) and Sallie McLaurin (2010) hold the OU record for Rookie of the Week awards with three each.
