NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished Sunday's first round of the Jim West Challenge in ninth place. The 13-team event is being played at the par-72, 6,373-yard Tapatio Spring Golf Resort in Boerne, Texas.
The Sooners, who logged a 297 (+9) in Sunday's round, finished 12 strokes behind No. 7-ranked Kent State and Texas A&M, who share the tournament lead at 285 (-3). Florida State and Texas Tech are tied for third place, each recording a 290 (+2).
Oklahoma's Hannah Wood pocketed four birdies in the opening round en route to a 71 (-1). The sophomore is tied for seventh place individually out of 72 competitors.
OU sophomore Ana Ruiz carded a 73 (+1) on the day and is tied for 17th place, while classmate Valerie Tanguay shares 36th place with a 75 (+3).
Sophomore Rylee Pedigo is tied for 54th place at 78 (+6) and freshman Julienne Soo shares 62nd place, registering an 81 (+9).
OU sophomore Haley Hill is playing as an individual in the event and is unattached from team scoring. Hill shot an 82 (+10) in Sunday's round and is in 69th place.
Seventh-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she sees improvements in her team's play.
"We did quite a few good things out on the course today, but we have to get better at remembering the little things," Drouin-Luttrell said. "We will make a few adjustments and try to improve on those things over the next two rounds."
