NORMAN – Former University of Oklahoma golfer Charlie Coe was inducted into the inaugural class of the Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame on Sunday, Oct. 25. Coe attended OU from 1946-48 and is considered one of the best amateur golfers of all time.

Coe competed in three conference championships with the Sooners, earning medalist honors at each. He also led OU to the team title all three seasons.

Following his collegiate career, the Ardmore, Okla., native chose to enter the oil business over the professional golf circuit, opting to have more time for his wife, Elizabeth, and three sons. However, Coe still built an impressive amateur career.

Coe won his first U.S. Amateur Championship in 1949 at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., and his second in 1958 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.

The former Sooner was successful in amateur events nationwide, including a streak of 27 consecutive match-play victories. Coe also won four Trans-Mississippi titles (1947, 1949, 1952, 1956) and the Western Amateur (1950), and he played on six Walker Cup teams from 1949 to 1963.

However, Coe was not limited to amateur competitions and had strong showings in the U.S. Open and the Masters. Coe competed at Augusta National 19 times and set many Masters amateur records, including: most cuts made (eight); top-24 finishes (nine); top-10 finishes (three); eagles (six), rounds played (67) and most times low amateur (six). He also holds the amateur records for best finish (2nd in 1961), lowest third-round score (67 in 1959), and lowest 72-hole score (281 in 1961).

In addition to his Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame honors, Coe was inducted into the second class of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 and was named an honoree at the 2006 PGA Tour Memorial Tournament.

The OU golf practice facility was named the Charlie Coe Golf Learning Center in his honor in 1998. Coe died May 16, 2001, at the age of 77.

Joining Coe in the first Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame class are course architect Perry Maxwell, former Oklahoma State golf coach and current athletic director Mike Holder, civil rights pioneer Bill Spiller, 25-time Champions Tour winner Gil Morgan and former U.S. Amateur, British Amateur and multiple PGA Tour winner Bob Dickson.
