Jones Makes NFL Debut, Leads Steelers to Win
An injury to starting quarterback Michael Vick forced Pittsburgh backup Landry Jones into the first regular season game action of his career, but the Sooners' all-time passing leader came through for the Steelers in a 25-13 win over Arizona.
Vick was injured early in the third quarter quarter forcing Jones into the game after he had previously only seen work in 11 preseason games over his three-year career.
On Jones' first drive he threw his first career touchdown pass, an eight-yard strike to Martavis Bryant in the back of the end zone. Jones found Bryant again later for a 23-yard completion on third down.
Early in the fourth, Jones hit Antonio Brown for another 23-yard gain before finding Bryant again for an 88-yard touchdown with under two minutes to play to put the game away.
Jones finished the game 8-12 passing for 168 yards and two scores. His quarterback rating was 149.3, which according to the Steelers was the second-highest by a player in their regular season debut (min. 10 attempts) in NFL history.
As for the Cardinals, safety Tony Jefferson had five tackles, while tight end Jermaine Gresham was targeted once.
Murray Comes Through Again for Eagles
One week after posting his best game of the season – 83 rushing yards and a touchdown, seven receptions for 37 yards – running back DeMarco Murray topped himself with 109 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts in Philadelphia's 27-7 win over the New York Giants on Monday night.
Murray, who also had three catches for 14 yards, went over the 100-yard mark for the first time as an Eagle and 20th time in his career. His touchdown came on a 12-yard run midway through the third quarter as he stiff-armed his way into the end zone to extend the Eagles' lead to 24-7.
Also for Philadelphia, Sam Bradford threw for 280 yards and a touchdown on 24-38 passing. His 32-yard touchdown pass to Riley Cooper late in the first quarter knotted the game at 7-7. The pair hooked up again early in the second half on a 43-yard gain, while Bradford also completed a 37-yard pass to Miles Austin in the game.
Starting at right tackle for the Eagles was Lane Johnson.
Hurst Waived by Chicago
One week after being promoted by Chicago from its practice squad to its active roster, defensive back Demontre Hurst was waived by the Bears. He played in Chicago's 37-34 overtime loss to Detroit, but did not record any stats.
Hurst remains a candidate to be put back on the Bears' practice squad if he clears waivers, according to the Chicago Tribune.
