NORMAN, Okla. – Junior right-hander Jake Elliott (Coppell, Texas) pitched 5.2 innings of one-run ball and senior center fielder Hunter Haley (Nacogdoches, Texas) went 4-for-5 with four RBI to lead Team Texas to an 11-1 win over Team World on Tuesday afternoon. The win evened the University of Oklahoma baseball team's intra-squad Fall World Series at a game apiece. The third and deciding game will take place Wednesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park at 3:00 pm. Admission is free.
Elliott earned the win for Texas with just one run allowed on three hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts. He twice struck out two batters in an inning and got four strikeouts of the looking variety.
Team Texas got its first run across in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out, two-strike single the other way for freshman second baseman Thomas Hughes (Norman, Okla.) through the right side. Haley followed with a blast to the track in left-center for a double, his second hit in as many innings, which drove in two. Junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) came up next and flew a double down the right field line to bring home Haley and make it a four-run innings for Texas.
Freshman right-hander Jake Irvin (Bloomington, Minn.) settled in for a pair of shutout-innings to finish a four-inning start for World. He took the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Redshirt-senior RHP Cole Stevens (Blanchard, Okla.) worked a strong fifth and got out of the inning with a 5-4-3 double play, but ran into trouble with one away in the sixth.
Team Texas got eighth-straight batters to reach base on seven hits and a walk to push across six runs in the inning. Haley knocked his second double to left-center, which drove in two more, and Neuse picked up his second RBI with a single to left.
For Texas, freshman righty JB Olson (Shady Shores, Texas) earned a three-inning save. He allowed just one hit against 11 batters faced.
Team Texas totaled 17 hits to just five for Team World. Along with Haley's four-hit day, freshman left fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) and freshman first baseman Chris Andritsos (The Woodlands, Texas) each went 3-for-5.
Overall, Sooner pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts and just four walks.
