NORMAN - It was truly a night for the record books for the No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team, with not one but two beautiful 10.0 routines for the Sooners.
OU posted a 197.850 in front of a program-record crowd of 3,293 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center to take a commanding victory over Southeast Missouri State and Texas Women's University. Oklahoma posted the highest overall score in the nation in a 2015 meet.
The Sooners were paced by a perfect 10.0 uneven bars routine from true freshman Brenna Dowell and a 10.0 on vault from junior Haley Scaman. The scores marked the first time in Oklahoma gymnastics history that the Sooners have posted multiple perfect 10.0s in a single meet.
"I was really excited about the energy in the building," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "What an amazing crowd and what an amazing opportunity for our athletes to compete with people like that in house cheering them on. We saw some really amazing performances across the board tonight."
Dowell became the first true freshman in OU program history to post a 10.0 on any event and the first gymnast in the nation to earn a 10.0 on uneven bars this season. Her perfect score on uneven bars was the first for Oklahoma since Erin LaBarr in 2005.
Scaman's 10.0 on vault was the second of her career on the event and her fourth on all events. No gymnast in Oklahoma program history owns more perfect 10.0s than Scaman.
OU completed its sweep of event titles on floor and balance beam. Dowell posted a beautiful 9.975 effort on floor to capture her first title on that event, while sophomore Chayse Capps took the beam title with a strong 9.95 outing.
"The crowd was awesome," added senior Erica Brewer. "I noticed that there were a lot more students than our home meet two weeks ago and the energy – we just fed off of it so well and I think that's what made it so much fun and got us to relax a little bit.”
OU opened with a bang and set the tempo high with a 49.575 on vault. The score ties for the third-best in the event in program history. Scaman's 10.0 in the anchor position was supported by several outstanding performances throughout the lineup. Ali Jackson continued to shine in the No. 5 spot, tying her career-high of 9.925 with a huge vault. Maile'ana Kanewa showed her strength and power as well, earning a 9.9 in the No. 2 position.
Oklahoma's lineup was strong from top to bottom, with 9.875s from Kara Lovan, Brenna Dowell and Chayse Capps rounding out a massive start for the Sooners.
"I think that when you get on a roll like that, people start rolling out some of their best routines ever," Kindler said. "I'm actually not surprised, but I'm really excited."
The 10.0's proved to be contagious for Oklahoma, with Dowell picking up another perfect score on uneven bars in the second rotation. Exquisite 9.95 routines from McKenzie Wofford and Erica Brewer helped pace the Sooners to a program-record score of 49.625. Keeley Kmieciak added a season-high 9.925 in the No. 2 spot for the high-flying lineup.
OU's momentum continued on balance beam as the team displayed steady confidence, bouncing back from a tough outing last week to earn a 49.375. The squad was anchored by a fluid and impressive performance from Capps as she picked up her meet-best score. The beginning of Oklahoma's lineup was also key, with Rebecca Clark and Kara Lovan each earning 9.875s in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Brewer added a 9.85 in the No. 5 position.
The Sooners capped the night on floor, battling back from a pair of uncharacteristic mistakes to pick up a 49.275 team score. Despite errors in the middle of OU's lineup, Dowell still shone with her 9.975 routine, opening with a stuck double front in her first pass. Lovan was also crucial for Oklahoma as she earned a career-high 9.925 in the No. 3 position.
By the end of the night, the Sooners had blazed past Southeast Missouri State (192.850) and Texas Women's University (190.350) to rise to 4-0 on the season. SEMO gymnast Alyssa Tucker took the all-around title with a career-high 39.125.
Recovery will be key for Oklahoma this week as it prepares for a double weekend against Denver and at the Metroplex Challenge. OU will open on Thursday, Jan. 29 against the Pioneers in Colorado before heading to Fort Worth for the Metroplex Challenge on Saturday. The quad meet will feature OU facing LSU, Arkansas and Iowa State.
The Sooners will return to the Lloyd Noble Center on Friday, March 6 to face the Florida Gators in OU's next home meet.
