NORMAN, Okla. - The 2014 WNBA playoffs are set to begin Thursday and former Oklahoma women's basketball stars Danielle Robinson and Amanda Thompson will each vie for a championship.
Robinson and the San Antonio Silver Stars finished third in the Western Conference with a 16-18 mark and will face the second seed and reigning WNBA champions Minnesota Lynx (25-9) in the semifinal round beginning Thursday at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2. Robinson, in her fourth year in the league and with the Silver Stars, played and started in 33 games in the regular season. She averaged 12.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.6 steals and a team-best 5.3 assists per game.
The Lynx won the season series with the Silver Stars 4-1. The Stars, however, responded with their season on the line in the last week of regular season, closing it out with three-straight wins, including a key victory over Minnesota Aug. 15 to clinch a playoff berth.
Robinson scored 12 points and dished out seven assists in the Stars important win over Minnesota to claim a spot in the playoffs. She began the final 3-game winning streak with 14 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals in the six-point win over the Los Angeles Sparks.
Thompson and the Atlanta Dream topped the Eastern Conference with a 19-15 record and will face the fourth seed Chicago Sky (15-19) in the semifinal round Friday at 6 p.m. CT on NBATV. Thompson, playing her first full season in the league since being drafted by the Tulsa Shock in 2010, saw action in 21 regular season contests, averaging 1.7 points and 2.1 rebounds a game.
Thompson's best outing this season was at the Seattle Storm, Aug. 7. The forward posted career-highs of seven points and six rebounds in the setback.
Chicago won the season-series with Atlanta 3-2.
