NORMAN, Okla. -- After 36 holes at the two-day Linger Longer Invitational, the 13th-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team sits in fourth place with a 566 (-10). The tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,073-yard Great Waters Golf Club at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga.
The Sooners cruised in the first round, firing a season-low 271 (-17), seven strokes better than their previous best, placing them in first on the leaderboard. However, OU struggled in the second round, shooting a 7-over 295.
The first-round score ties for the second-best 18-hole mark in program history with the 2011 Border Olympics first round and 2003 Sooner Invitational second round.
The 15-team field features seven squads ranked within the top 50 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll, including the Sooners. No. 1 Alabama and No. 5 Georgia are tied for first place with scores of 556 (-20). In third and fifth place are co-hosts No. 36 Mercer and No. 37 Kennesaw State with scores of 565 (-11) and 571 (-5), respectively.
“We pitched a perfect game in the morning, but we got run ruled in the afternoon,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “We still have a chance to win the tournament tomorrow.”
In a tie for seventh place out of 84 individuals, Michael Gellerman leads the Sooners after the first two rounds of competition. The junior carded a 139 (-5) Saturday, including a bogey-free 67 (-5), matching his career-low round, for the first 18 holes and a second-round 72 (E). Between the two rounds, Gellerman fired eight birdies.
In round one, sophomore Beau Titsworth eagled the par- hole No. 18 and pocketed four birdies en route to a 5-under 67, a season low. He followed with a 74 (+2), bringing his two-round total to 141 (-3), good for a tie for 15th place.
Two strokes behind Titsworth is Charlie Saxon with a 1-over 143. The junior, who shot a 70 (-2) and 73 (+1) on Saturday, is tied for 25th place. In total, Saxon pocketed eight birdies.
With a 1-over 145, senior Michael Schoolcraft finds himself tied for 32nd place after posting scores of 67 (-5) and 78 (+6).
Freshman Max McGreevy carded a 75 (+3) and 76 (+4) in the first and second rounds, respectively, for a total of 151 (+7). He sits in a tie for 61st place.
Competing as individuals are freshman Emilio Mauer and senior Eduardo Castiello. Maurer is tied for 48th place with a 148 (+4), while Castiello sits tied for 71st place with a 154 (+10).
The final round of the Linger Longer Invitational is scheduled for Sunday with a shotgun start. OU will be paired with Georgia, Alabama and Mercer in the round, with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. CT. Live stats (updated every three holes) are available at GolfStat.com.
