FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team was good at the Metroplex Challenge, but on Friday night No. 3 Stanford was a little better.
Despite trailing the Sooners with one rotation remaining, the Cardinal came from behind to defeat OU, 445.150 to 442.400. The loss was OU's first of the season and came just six days after the Sooners defeated Stanford in Norman.
Oklahoma had three event champions - freshman
Colin Van Wicklen on floor, junior
Michael Squires on still rings and senior
Stanton Rehkemper on high bar. Freshman
Allan Bower also took the all-around title with an 87.800.
OU began the meet on high bar. A big-time score of 15.350 from Rehkemper paced the Sooners, giving the senior a career high. Junior
William Clement tacked on a 14.950 while
Danny Berardini added a 14.800.
Next on floor, Van Wicklen scored the second-highest point total of any gymnast in the country so far this year with a 15.550, trailing only teammate
Alec Robin's high of 15.600. Senior
Raymond White tied his career high in the anchor position with a 15.500.
All told, OU finished with a floor score of 76.500, the nation's second highest score this season after the Sooners' 76.550 they set just six days ago.
After scoring a 72.600 on pommel horse behind junior
Michael Reid's 15.100, OU earned a score of 75.550 on still rings. Defending national champion Squires took home top honors with a 16.100.
Up on the Cardinal by almost three points at 372.050 to 369.600 with one rotation remaining, the Sooners had an uncharacteristically rough night on parallel bars. OU finished with a 70.350 as Reid scored 14.850 and junior Sergey Resnick had a 14.750.
Select members of the team will compete at Winter Cup starting Thursday, Feb. 20. The Sooners' next meet will be Senior Day on Sunday, March 9, at 4 p.m. CT against Nebraska in McCasland Field House.
