NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma volleyball team boasts a program-best with three players named to the AVCA All-Southwest Region Team, including Region Freshman of the Year Marion Hazelwood. Joining Hazelwood on the First Team are juniors Julia Doyle and Kierra Holst. Redshirt-sophomore Madison Ward earned recognition as an Honorable Mention.
Last week, the Sooners set a new program standard with Doyle, Holst and Ward all earning All-Big 12 First Team selection. Since 2006, Oklahoma has had nine players named to the AVCA All-Region First Team. The Sooners twice placed two players on the All-Region squad in both 2006 and 2011. Eliane Santos and Joanna Schmitt were the first duo to do so, while Brianne Barker and Suzy Boulavsky accomplished the feat most recently.
Hazelwood, a middle blocker from Beach City, Texas and an All-Big 12 Freshman Team selection, is the first Freshman of the Year from Oklahoma. She finished her rookie campaign with a team-high .322 hitting percentage, while averaging 2.27 kills and 0.90 blocks per set. In her postseason debut, Hazelwood led the OU attack with 11 kills and a .526 attack rate against LSU.
The Big 12 Setter of the Year, Doyle, a junior and product of Plymouth, Minn., paced the Sooner offense with a career-best 10.63 assists per set. She finished the season ranked fourth in the league with 10 double-double and posted a career-high 60 assists in a five-set match against Iowa State. Doyle enters her senior season with 3,481 career assists; ranking sixth all-time at Oklahoma.
Holst, an outside hitter from Coppell, Texas, was previously named a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection with Ward. She surpassed 1,000 career kills in the regular season finale and took over the top spot for kills in a single season during the 25-point, rally-scoring era at 450 against LSU in the NCAA First Round, For the season, Holst averaged 3.75 kills per set; highlighted with a 32-kill, record-setting effort against Iowa State.
Rounding out the honors for OU is Ward, an outside hitter from Lawton, Okla. She finished second on the team with a 3.08 kills per set and 2.44 digs per set average, despite missing the final five matches of the regular season. She was second on the team behind Doyle in double-doubles at eight. Ward posted a career-high 21 kills in dominating fashion as the Sooners swept West Virginia at home on November 1.
Oklahoma finished the season 20-11 overall, marking its fifth straight 20-win season and sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament; all under 11-year head coach Santiago Restrepo.
