NORMAN -- The University of Oklahoma and Patriot Ford honored United States Navy Rear Admiral Doug McClain as Saturday's Patriot Ford Patriot of the Game during the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State football game.
Rear Admiral McClain is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and was a member of the OU Naval ROTC. He has spent 11 years of his 32-year career deployed at-sea including over four years in the Persian Gulf. Rear Admiral McClain has participated in over 300 missions in support of Operation Desert Storm, Operation Southern Watch and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
He has completed over 1,500 aircraft carrier landings and flew with world-famous U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, The Blue Angels. Rear Admiral McClain was in the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, where he assisted in the rescue of numerous victims and was instrumental in directing the National Command Authority for actions surrounding 9-11.
Rear Admiral McClain has been highly-decorated during his 32-year career serving our nation, including two Defense Superior Service Medals, Four Legion of Merit honors and the Meritorious Service Medal. Along with all Oklahomans, the University of Oklahoma joins Rear Admiral McClain on Sunday in remembering the 73rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor that took over 2,000 American lives and sunk numerous warships, including the USS Oklahoma.
Rear Admiral McClain assisted in raising funds to help build the USS Oklahoma Memorial that is now located on Ford Island at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Sooners everywhere salute the contributions of our servicemen and women past and present around the globe, especially OU's own Rear Admiral Doug McClain, his wife, Doni, and their family.
