NORMAN -- A packed house at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center cheered the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team through its annual intrasquad meet on Friday night. The Sooners previewed new routines and skills on all four events in a live meet setting with two judges per event.
True freshmen Ali Jackson and Brenna Dowell led the way with powerful 11/2 twisting Yurchenkos. Jackson exploded for a 9.9 on the event, and Dowell followed close behind with a 9.875. Juniors Haley Scaman and Hunter Price aided with 9.85s each, including a strong outing for Price on her handspring pike-half vault.
Dowell also shone on uneven bars, anchoring the Oklahoma lineup with her full-twisting double layout. McKenzie Wofford's strong work in the offseason yielded a smooth outing and a 9.85 effort for the sophomore.
Some nerves on beam led to minor wobbles on the night, but veteran performances led the way. Senior Haley Sorensen showed off clean lines and fluid dance, earning a 9.9 for her performance. Sophomore Chayse Capps anchored the lineup for OU with a 9.85 performance that included a beautiful front aerial scale.
Oklahoma closed the night on floor, combining unique musical selections with the dynamic choreography head coach K.J. Kindler has become known for. Scaman led the way again for OU with a 9.825 effort to her blues musical selection. Erica Brewer's energetic performance gave her a 9.8, while Jackson and Capps also impressed with strong outings.
Sophomore Kara Lovan was the lone Sooners to compete in the all-around as she cracked the top-six lineup on every apparatus. Brewer, Capps and Scaman were each three event competitors, while Capps and Scaman also competed in additional exhibition routines.
OU is set to open the 2015 season on Jan. 9 at 6:45 p.m. in Norman. The Sooners will face the Arkansas Razorbacks in the opener. Season tickets are on sale now, including a new reserved option that includes a pre-meet meal and special gift.
