OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma volleyball team placed three student-athletes on the AVCA All-America Honorable Mention list. Juniors Julia Doyle and outside hitter Kierra Holst along with freshman Marion Hazelwood, the AVCA All-Southwest Region Rookie of the Year, became the second trio at OU to receive All-America recognition.
For the fifth straight season, the Sooners place at least player on the AVCA All-America Honorable Mention list or better. Sallie McLaurin was a Second and Third Team All-American the last two seasons as well as an Honorable Mention in 2011. In 2011, Brianne Barker earned a Third Team nod and Suzy Boulavksy joined McLaurin as an Honorable Mention.
Doyle, Hazelwood and Holst were all honored last week as AVCA All-Southwest First Team members along with Honorable Mention redshirt-sophomore Madison Ward.
Hazelwood, a middle blocker from Beach City, Texas and an All-Big 12 Freshman Team selection, is the first Freshman of the Year from Oklahoma. She finished her rookie campaign with a team-high .322 hitting percentage, while averaging 2.27 kills and 0.90 blocks per set. In her postseason debut, Hazelwood led the OU attack with 11 kills and a .526 attack rate against LSU.
The Big 12 Setter of the Year, Doyle, a junior and product of Plymouth, Minn., paced the Sooner offense with a career-best 10.63 assists per set. She finished the season ranked fourth in the league with 10 double-double and posted a career-high 60 assists in a five-set match against Iowa State. Doyle enters her senior season with 3,481 career assists; ranking sixth all-time at Oklahoma.
Holst, an outside hitter from Coppell, Texas, was previously named a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection with Ward. She surpassed 1,000 career kills in the regular season finale and took over the top spot for kills in a single season during the 25-point, rally-scoring era at 450 against LSU in the NCAA First Round, For the season, Holst averaged 3.75 kills per set; highlighted with a 32-kill, record-setting effort against Iowa State.
Oklahoma finished the season 20-11 overall, marking its fifth straight 20-win season and sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament; all under 11-year head coach Santiago Restrepo.
