NORMAN – In its last tournament of the fall season, the University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished Monday's final two rounds of the 12-team Jim West Challenge in sixth place in San Antonio, Texas. Four Sooners finished in the top 22 in the three-round event that was held at the 6,234-yard, par-72 Tapatio Springs Golf Club.
The Sooners, who carded a 54-hole 910 (+46), finished 24 strokes behind tournament champion and 23rd-ranked Texas A&M. Houston finished in second place at +28 and third-place Texas Tech finished at +29.
Ana Ruiz led the Sooners for the third straight tournament, tying for 16th place out of 69 competitors with a 226 (+10). The freshman logged a second-round 70 (-2) Monday morning, which included an eagle on the par-5 first hole. Ruiz followed with an 82 (+10) in the afternoon.
OU sophomore Maggie Neece and freshman Hannah Wood finished the event in a 20th-place tie at 228 (+12). Neece recorded a second-round 75 (+5) and a third-round 74 (+2), while Wood shot a second-round 79 (+7) and a final-round 73 (+1).
Sooners sophomore Alexandra Kaui tied for 22nd place with a three-round 230 (+14). Kaui shot a 77 (+5) in both the second and third rounds.
OU freshman Rylee Pedigo registered a 242 (+26) in the event to finish in 61st place. Pedigo shot a 79 (+7) in the second round and finished the tournament with a round-three 80 (+8).
Sophomore Amanda Johnson competed as an individual in the tournament and was unattached from team scoring. Johnson finished in 69th place at 254 (+38). Johnson logged an 87 (+14) in the second round and followed with a final-round 81 (+9).
Sixth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she hopes to continue improving through the offseason.
“We had some good scores this week and that's definitely a positive we can carry with us,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “We will be doing some work in the offseason to get ready for the spring. We're excited to keep getting better through the winter.”
The Sooners will return to the course Feb. 22-23 for the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz.
