IRVING, Texas – University of Oklahoma volleyball redshirt-sophomore Madison Ward was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. The award is the second weekly honor of her career and the fourth for the Sooners following junior Kierra Holst claiming her second of the season a week ago.
Ward and Holst were named back-to-back winners for the second time this season. The duo became the first pair at Oklahoma to earn multiple weekly awards in the same season.
An outside hitter from Lawton, Okla., Ward tallied a career-high 21 kills and hit an astounding .679, with only two errors on 28 attempts, in a 3-0 sweep over West Virginia at home on Saturday night. She added six digs, two blocks and a service ace.
In the first set, Ward dominated on the attack with 11 kills and a near perfect attack rate at .846 on 13 total attacks with no errors.
On the season, Ward is averaging 3.16 kills per set and hitting at a rate of .244. Since the start of Big 12 play, she is averaging 4.15 kills and 2.64 digs per set to go with a .310 hitting percentage. Overall, she ranks second on the team at 2.41 digs per set and has chipped in with 33 blocks, 23 service aces and 20 assists.
Following a freshman season cut short by injuries, Ward bounced back to earn a spot on the All-Big 12 Freshman Team at the conclusion of the 2013 season.
Oklahoma is on the road twice this week at TCU on Wednesday and at Baylor on Saturday.
