NORMAN, Okla. – The final week of the regular season kicks off for Oklahoma volleyball with its home finale against Kansas State at 7:00 pm Wednesday, November 26 on “Senior Night”.
Oklahoma is 19-9 overall, 9-5 in the Big 12 and tied for second place with Kansas State. The winner is guaranteed at least a share of second place in the final standings. The Sooners are led by junior outside hitter Kierra Holst at 3.74 kills per set. Holst's season total sits at 404, which is the fourth highest in at OU in the 25-point, rally-scoring era. In the absence of redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Madison Ward (concussion), sophomore Kimmy Gardiner has averaged 2.62 kills per set to lift her season average to 2.28. Junior setter Julia Doyle has established a personal single season-high in assists with 1,150; averaging 10.65 per set. Defensively, junior libero Taylor Migliazzo ranks first on the Sooners with 3.49 digs per set. OU is 7-17 when attempting to even a Big 12 season series since 2006; the team's first winning season under Santiago Restrepo.
Kansas State is the second highest vote-getter among unranked teams, on spot ahead of Oklahoma, at 22-6 overall and 9-5 in the Big 12. Outside hitter Kylee Zumach is first for the Wildcats at 3.63 kills per set. Setter Katie Brand is second in the conference with an 11.17 assists per set average. K-State averages 2.84 blocks per set, led by Natali Jones (1.38) and Katie Reininger (1.18). The Wildcats ended a three-match losing streak by winning their last two at Baylor in five and a home sweep against TCU.
Last Time They Met
No. 22 Kansas State swept Oklahoma on October 22; 25-14, 25-19, 26-24. The Sooners led 24-20 in the third, with a chance to force a fourth set, but failed to close it out as the Wildcats rallied for six straight points. Holst hit a season-high .588 on 11 kills, K-State hit .389 for the match, marking the highest by an OU opponent this season, and held the Sooners to a .192 attack rate. Jones led all players with 12 kills and seven blocks. The Wildcats totaled 11 blocks to Oklahoma's four.
The Sooners hold a significant advantage over the Wildcats in the all-time series; 52-27-1. OU twice defeated a ranked K-State squad in 2012 and earned a split in the season series in 2013. Since 2006, Oklahoma has won 12 of 17 match-ups. The first contest between the two programs was a 1-1 tie in Lawrence, Kan. in 1975.
