NORMAN, Okla. – Big 12 plays resumes as the Oklahoma volleyball team hits the final stretch of the regular season beginning at Texas Tech Saturday at 3:00 pm.
Oklahoma is 18-9 overall, 8-5 in the Big 12 and tied for second place with Kansas State and Kansas; the final two teams remaining on OU's schedule. The Sooners are led by junior outside hitter Kierra Holst at 3.67 kills per set. Holst's season total sits at 385, which is the fourth highest in at OU in the 25-point, rally-scoring era. In the absence of redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Madison Ward (concussion), sophomore Kimmy Gardiner has averaged 2.50 kills per set to lift her season average to 2.26. Junior setter Julia Doyle has established a personal single season-high in assists with 1,111; averaging 10.58 per set. Defensively, junior libero Taylor Migliazzo ranks first on the Sooners with 3.48 digs per set. Oklahoma has gone five sets in four of its last five matches and has an overall record of 3-5 in five-setters.
Texas Tech is 15-11 overall, but just 3-11 in the Big 12 and has lost 10 of its last 11 matches. The Red Raiders' libero Rachel Brummitt ranks second in the league with 4.91 digs per set. On the attack, outside hitter Jenna Allen is averaging a team-best 3.19 kills per set followed by Breeann David at 3.05. Middle blocker Mikia Mills leads a defense that averages 2.36 blocks per set at 1.03 on the season. As a team, Texas Tech hits just .195, but holds its opponents to a .185 attack rate, which ranks third in the Big 12.
Freshman middle blocker Marion Hazelwood powered Oklahoma, in what was otherwise an off night offensively, to a 3-1 win on October 15. She notched a match-high 15 kills and hit .737 on one error to set a program record for hitting percentage in a four-set match. The Sooners fell in the first, 25-22, and rallied behind wins of 25-23, 26-24 and 26-24. David and Allen tallied 12 kills apiece to lead the Texas Tech attack, while Brummitt posted a match-high 23 digs. Hazelwood and Gardiner each has six blocks.
Despite winning each of the last 18 meetings, the Sooners still trailed the all-time series against the Red Raiders, 34-31. On the road, Oklahoma trails, 14-10. Under Santiago Restrepo, the Sooners own a 19-2 record with the two losses coming in 2004 and 2005.
The Sooners return to Norman for the home finale against Kansas State Wednesday, November 26 at 7:00 pm. Senior Kaitlyn Drawe will be honored for “Senior Night”.
