NORMAN, Okla. – A short break from Big 12 play comes as the University of Oklahoma volleyball team hosts Central Arkansas at McCasland Field House for a 7:00 pm match on November 18.
Oklahoma is 17-9 overall, 8-5 in the Big 12 and tied for second place with Kansas State. The Sooners, who have lost back-to-back home matches for the first time since 2011, dropped a pair of five-set matches to Iowa State and No. 5 Texas last week. Junior outside hitter Kierra Holst has been dominant at outside hitter, averaging 3.65 kills per set. Junior setter Julia Doyle paces the OU attack to the tune of 10.60 assists per set to go with 2.25 digs per set. Junior libero Taylor Migliazzo leads the Sooners' back row with a 3.48 digs per set average. Oklahoma has lost three of its last four matches, similar to losing three in a row last November. In 2013, the Sooners responded from that slump by winning six in a row and advancing to the NCAA Second Round in Palo Alto, Calif.
Central Arkansas is 18-10 and 13-3 in the Southland Conference. A perennial top team in the Southland, the Sugar Bears have leveled off of late with a 3-3 record since the end of October. Outside hitter Heather Schnars leads UCA at 4.21 kills per set, while hitting .300. Fellow outside hitter Evie Singleton is second on the team at 3.37. Libero Shelbee Berringer leads the defense at 4.46 digs per set, while right-side hitter Megan Nash contributes 0.75 blocks per set. Central Arkansas and Oklahoma have not played a common opponent this season.
Oklahoma defeated Central Arkansas, 3-1, at home on September 1, 2010. The Sooner victory came by scores of 25-16, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-18. Oklahoma got 19 kills from Suzy Boulavsky and 16 from Caitlin Higgins. Higgins tallied a double-double with a 12-digs effort. Brianne Barker recorded a double-double with 50 assists and 10 digs for the sixth 50-plus assist match of her career. Maria Fernanda guided the defense with 21 digs.
For the second straight season, Oklahoma played in front of the second largest home crowd in program history when No. 5 Texas came to McCasland on November 15.The 2,439 fans in attendance bested the second highest mark set in 2013 of 2,128.
