Ressler totalled two shots (both on goal) in the match, including the first of the contest in the 4th minute of play. Her goal was the first-ever for Oklahoma in an NCAA Tournament and gave OU and early 1-0 lead in the match. |
NORMAN -- The ride had to stop somewhere, but what a ride it was for the Oklahoma soccer team.
The Sooners, picked last in the Big 12 preseason poll, exceeded every expectation before falling 3-2 to Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The match brings an end to a season that saw OU knock off five ranked teams, make a run to the Big 12 Championship final and log the program's third appearance all-time in NCAA play.
Sophomore Rachel Ressler and true freshman Chelsea Jackson netted goals for Oklahoma, both off assists from senior Abby Hodgen, but it wasn't enough to stave off Arkansas in the first round.
OU struck fast out of the gates when Ressler sent in a strike from the edge of the box off an assist from Hodgen for her third goal of the season. Ressler's score was Oklahoma's fastest yet this season, clocking in at the 4:16 mark, and marked the first-ever goal for Oklahoma in NCAA play.
The Sooner offense continued to slash through the Arkansas defense with ease, repeatedly challenging on shots from Jackson, Hodgen and Jemma Cota in the next seven minutes.
It only took 10 minutes for the Sooners to strike again when Hodgen drove the ball back into the box and took an attempt. Her ball was deflected, but Jackson was there to control the ball and send it in, giving OU an early 2-0 lead.
Arkansas challenged back in the 18th minute, forcing a corner and later a shot from Alexandra Fisher, but the Oklahoma defense was there to make the save prevent any damage done.
The half was dwindling away when the Razorbacks cut into OU's lead. Gabriella Delon got a touch in the box off a deflection from Oklahoma GK Kaitlyn Fahrner, tapping the ball in to give Arkansas a goal before halftime.
The Razorbacks found the equalizer within the first two minutes of the second half when Claire Kelley headed in a throw-in from Ashleigh Ellenwood.
With the match knotted up at 2-2, the teams began to battle back and forth as they attempted to establish field position. Oklahoma's offensive efforts were re-ignited in the 68th minute when Jordyn Webster blazed down the left side into the top of the box, firing in a shot that swung just high over the goal.
Arkansas pushed back on back-to-back headers in the 74th minute, but Oklahoma was there to clear out the ball each time and avoid the threat. The Sooners were especially strong on the second ball, which bounced around off multiple short-range headers before OU cleared.
Oklahoma ended the half with four corner kicks in the last six minutes, logging shots on each, but none of the attempts could find the back of the net. A shot from Madison Kinzer was blocked, and her header attempt on another was tipped out of bounds. Laura Rayfield fired a long attempt that sailed high, while Madeline Brem's header shot swung wide.
The match moved to overtime, marking the 19th time this season that a match involving either Oklahoma or Arkansas has gone to OT. It took less than two minutes for the contest to go final, as Deleon found the net again when she tapped in a ball in the scrum following a throw-in. Fahrner was there to snag the ball, but it was whistled over the line before the ball was controlled and the match was called final.
