IRVING, Texas -- Two road wins in Big 12 play means two weekly awards for Oklahoma soccer.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Fahrner and junior defender Laura Rayfield each captured weekly honors from the Big 12 following last weekend's contests. Fahrner was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, while Rayfield picked up Newcomer of the Week accolades.
The awards for OU came after the program's first 2-0 start to conference play since 2005. The Sooners knocked off No. 10 Texas Tech in Lubbock before capping the weekend with a victory over Iowa State in Ames.
Fahrner opened her first weekend of conference competition with back-to-back shutouts, becoming the first Oklahoma goalkeeper since 2010 to post consecutive shutouts in conference play. The freshman goalie faced the league's No. 1 and No. 3 goal scorers and held each team scoreless, notching 10 saves. Her four shutouts this season are already the most in a season for OU since 2010. Fahrner's award is her third this season--the most of any goalkeeper in the conference.
Fahrner was also named the CollegeSportsMadness.com National Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts.
Rayfield posted her first goal of the year against Iowa State on Sunday afternoon, chipping in a free kick from the left side of the box in the 47th minute of play. The game-winner extended the Sooners winning streak to three matches. Rayfield also has four assists this season, a total that is tied for fourth in the Big 12. The honor is Rayfield's first this season.
Oklahoma will be back in action this weekend at home, facing Baylor on Friday night at 7 p.m. before welcoming TCU on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at John Crain Field in Norman and broadcast live on Sooner Sports TV.
