Bowman split set piece duties with Abby Hodgen, delivering several powerful and well-placed kicks to help OU pressure Baylor in the second half. NORMAN -- The Oklahoma soccer team wrapped up a tough split weekend on Sunday evening, falling in a 2-1 decision to Baylor at John Crain Field. The match was a make-up contest after the previous game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
OU (8-5-3, 2-2-1 Big 12) dropped its second consecutive Big 12 match with the loss to Baylor (8-5-2, 2-2-1 Big 12), marking only the second time this season that the Sooners have lost back-to-back contests. The last time the Sooners lost two in a row this season, the squad rebounded to rattle off three straight wins.
After possessing the ball well in the initial minutes of the match, the Sooners began to grapple with containing Baylor's offense during the half. The Bears snagged back-to-back corners early, following up with a quick 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Justine Hovden sent in a cross from Bri Campos on the right side, booting the ball past Fahrner to put the Sooners in an early hole.
Oklahoma came clawing back midway through the half when Abby Hodgen drove in and hammered a high shot that dinged down off the crossbar, and Devin Barrett met the ball to send it in and give OU the equalizer in the 28th minute.
Mere seconds later, Baylor responded. A long-range set piece was corralled by Campos again, who flicked the ball to Anja Rosales to put the Lady Bears back up 2-1. The score would stand at halftime.
The Sooners came out firing and ready to pour on the pressure in the second half. After a disappointing first half on offense, OU outshot BU 8-5 in the second half and added all six of its corner kicks.
The second half was a series of incredibly close chances for the Sooner offense. In the 58th minute, Molly Richey drove down the right side of Baylor's box with a beautiful ball, but was tripped up and unable to maintain her possession.
OU ratcheted up the intensity as the clock ticked under 20 minutes to go, getting three huge chances off a free kick and back-to-back corners. Emily Bowman, who entered the match at defender to replace an injured Laura Rayfield, sent several soaring kicks in to give her teammates several opportunities but no dice.
Tori Bowman had perhaps OU's best chance of the second half as the clock moved under the five minute mark. The true freshman unloaded on a shot from 20 yards out that just skimmed over the top of the crossbar, narrowly missing its target.
Despite Oklahoma's second-half surge, the 2-1 deficit was too much to overcome and the score went final.
Oklahoma will continue Big 12 competition beginning next Friday with a split home-and-away weekend. The Sooners will open with a home match against Red River foe Texas on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on West Virginia on the road on Sunday at noon.
