Sooners Conclude Fall Openers

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team captured five singles victories in the final rounds of its season openers in Little Rock, Ark. and Williamsburg, Va.

The Sooners captured two wins against players from William and Mary at the Tribe Invitational. Senior Whitney Ritchie defeated Leeza Nemchinov 6-0, 5-4, and sophomore Emma Devine had a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nabila Farah to earn third place in her flight.

In added matches, junior Abbi Melrose defeated Luisa Fernandez (Wake Forest) 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Zita Engbroks battled to a third set with Kai Broomfield (Marshall) but fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Finishing her first weekend of collegiate play, freshman Ann Pepper fell to Marie Faure (Virginia) 7-5, 7-5.

At the Country Club of Little Rock Invitational, senior Mia Lancaster defeated Memphis' Caroline Wegner 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Morgan Chumney also finished her weekend with a win by defeating Houston's Celia Fraser 6-4, 6-3.

Seniors Hermon Brhane and Whitney Wofford both fell in their final singles matches to Yang Pang (Arkansas) 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 and Alyssa Hibberd (Memphis) 6-3, 6-1, respectively.

“I really felt like we got a lot out of this weekend,” head coach David Mullins said. “Mia was a little unlucky not to go 3-0 this weekend in singles but played some of the best tennis I have ever seen her play. Morgan picked up another win and looked extremely comfortable in her first college tournament.”
