L. Dale Mitchell became the eighth Sooner to reach the big leagues in 1946 and was the first alum to be named an All-Star at the game's highest level. A .312 career hitter over his 11 seasons, Mitchell hit a career-best .336 for the Cleveland Indians in 1948 and led the American League in hits with 203, while being named an All-Star in 1949.
Overall, 69 players with ties to the University of Oklahoma have appeared in a Major League Baseball game. Lindy McDaniel spent 21 seasons in the bigs from 1955-75, the longest career of any Sooner. Primarily a reliever, he won 141 games and saved 172, leading the National League on four occasions. McDaniel spent eight seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he was named a NL All-Star in 1960, while experiencing his most successful years with the New York Yankees.
Eddie Fisher pitched 15 seasons with six teams from 1959-73, including seven years with the Chicago White Sox. He won 85 games and saved 81. Fisher was an AL All-Star in 1965, posting career-high in wins (15) and saves (24).
From 1979-90, Mickey Hatcher played corner outfield and infield positions for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins. A .280 career hitter, he started all five games of the 1988 World Series in left field for the World Champion Dodgers.
As Oklahoma's highest MLB Draft pick, until matched in 2013, Bobby Witt pitched in the majors from 1986-01. He won 142 games and struck out 1,955 batters, which ranks 80th in MLB history. After spending 11 of his 16 seasons with the Texas Rangers, Witt was a part of the Arizona Diamondbacks 2001 World Championship.
Greg Norton made a 13-year Major League career as a pinch-hitter and corner infielder. He hit 89 home runs, the most of any Sooner, between 1996-09, and totaled 600 hits with six different teams.
A member of the 1994 CWS Championship team, Russ Ortiz pitched for six MLB teams from 1998-10. He led the NL with 21 wins for the Atlanta Braves in 2003 and was named an All-Star, finishing fourth in Cy Young voting.
Mark Redman was a member of the 1994 Sooners and a 1995 First Round pick of the Minnesota Twins. He won 14 games and started game three for the World Series Champion Florida Marlins in 2003. Redman was later an AL All-Star with the Kansas City Royals in 2006.
Six former Sooners played in the majors in 2014, including Jason Bartlett, Greg Dobbs, Daniel McCutchen and Garrett Richards along with Chase Anderson and Jackson Williams, who made their MLB debut. Dobbs was a 2008 World Series Champion with the Philadelphia Phillies, defeating fellow Sooner Bartlett and the Tampa Bay Rays.
OU and the MLB Draft
Since the Major League Baseball first-year player draft started in 1965, 259 Sooners have been selected over the last 52 years. Michael Burns, a 41st round pick of the Cleveland Indians became the first OU player drafted in 1967. At least one Sooner has been selected in each draft since 1970.
Outfielder Ralph Rickey became Oklahoma's first-ever first round pick as he was taken 15th overall by the Chicago Cubs in 1968. In program history, 10 players have been selected in the first round. Most recently, right-hander Jonathan Gray was drafted third overall by the Colorado Rockies in 2013. Gray matched fellow righty Bobby Witt as Oklahoma's highest draft pick. Witt, who won 142 MLB games and a World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, was chosen third by the Texas Rangers in 1985. Right-hander Jack Armstrong (1987, 18th, Cincinnati Reds) and left-hander Mark Redman (1995, 13th, Minnesota Twins) both are the only two players in Sooners history to be first round picks and MLB All-Stars.
In 2011, Oklahoma led the Big 12 and ranked second in the nation with 11 players selected; the most in program history. Catcher Tyler Ogle was the highest pick of the group; going to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the ninth round. Right-hander Burch Smith, a 14th round pick, became the first from his draft class to debut in the majors in 2013 with the San Diego Padres.
The Sooners matched their program record with 11 draft picks in 2015; the most in the nation. Oklahoma featured two day two picks in catcher Anthony Hermelyn to the Houston Astros in the fourth round and lefty Jacob Evans to the St. Louis Cardinals in the sixth. Of Oklahoma's 11 selections, nine had been undrafted upon arriving at OU, including each of the team's top three picks that was rounded out by Craig Aikin to the Cardinals in the 13th.
