Brooks Breaks Record, Sooners Qualify

AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Tia Brooks had another record-breaking throw in the shot put to lead a slew of outstanding performances by the Oklahoma track and field teams at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday.
Brooks secured a throw of 18.96 meters on her sixth and final toss of the day. The mark is the second-longest throw in
women's outdoor collegiate history and shattered the NCAA postseason meet record of 18.65 meters set 15 years ago. Brooks actually broke the record with her second throw of 18.69 meters, then again with an 18.95-meter toss on her third throw before setting the new long distance.
Brooks, the reigning NCAA champion in the event, will go for another national championship and the collegiate record of 18.99 meters in Eugene, Ore., in two weeks. She already broke the indoor collegiate shot put record earlier this year with a throw of 19.22 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Sooners also boasted a first-place finish over on the men's side in the 1,500 meters where Patrick Casey finished in 3:44.48 to take the top spot by over four seconds. Fellow OU standout Riley Masters will join Casey at nationals, crossing the finish line right behind Casey in second place in 3:48.78. The senior Sooners also finished first and second at the Big 12 Championships this season.
Freshman Avione Allgood had a career day in the women's javelin, besting her career high throw of 52.19 meters set in winning the Big 12 championship by going 52.31 meters to finish second on Saturday. Fellow freshman Elizabeth Herrs reached the finals but fell one spot short of the qualifying for nationals, finishing 13th with a distance of 47.21 meters.
In the final event of the night, the men's 4x400 relay, run by Ethan Baker, Jamel Wood, Waymon Storey and Nathaniel Winfrey, qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing 10th in a time of 3:06.15. Earlier in the day, the men's 4x100 relay team also almost qualified but finished just short of qualifying in the 13th spot.
In the men's triple jump, senior Wayne Walls finished out his career with a 14th-place finish, leaping just short of a career-long distance at 15.61 meters.
Also on Saturday, Storey finished 17th in the men's 200 meters in a time of 21.31 seconds and senior Kevin Williams took 22nd in the 5,000 meters with a 14:25.30 time.
Freshman Tyler Renton placed 31st with a best throw of 61.22 meters, senior Whitney Johnson took 35th in the women's triple jump at 12.09 meters and senior Holden Mitchell finished 39th in the men's hammer throw at 54.76 meters.
Brooks, Casey, Masters and Allgood will join fellow Sooner qualifiers Williams (10,000 meters), Austin Perry (shot put) and Kristen Rice (high jump) on June 6-8 at the NCAA Championships held in Eugene, Ore.
