AUSTIN, Texas - University of Oklahoma senior Kevin Williams earned a bid to the NCAA Championships Thursday, placing 11th in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA West Regional.
Williams, the Big 12 runner-up in the event, crossed the finish line in 30:23.88 to earn a spot at the outdoor championship competition for the first time in his career.
In the 1,500 meters for the Sooners, seniors Patrick Casey and Riley Masters came in with the top two times in the 1,500 meters, a repeat of the duo's finish at the Big 12 Championships. Casey took first in his heat with a time of 3:43.84 while Masters finished in 3:44.45, finish first in his heat, also. The two runners will compete in the 1,500 meter regional final on Saturday looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Also qualifying for a regional event final for the men was junior Nathaniel Winfrey in the 400-meter hurdles. Winfrey finished fourth in his heat and 21st overall to earn a chance on Friday to move to nationals.
Competing in his first Regional, freshman Kaelan Washington jumped 7.42 meters in the long jump, good for a tie for the final spot in the Regional finals, but did not advance due to tiebreaker rules, finishing 17th overall. Sophomore Ethan Baker also just missed out in the 400-meter dash, finishing three spots from advancing at 27th overall.
Junior Erin Jones and freshman Cessily Jones raced in the 100 meters for the OU's women's team, finishing outside of qualifying at 32nd and 43rd, respectively. Junior Hilary Krein also ran the 1,500 meters for the Sooners, placing 43rd overall.
Twelve competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event will advance from each Regional to the NCAA Championships held June 6-8 in Eugene, Ore.
