Two of the country's best basketball teams will be heading to Kansas City for the Big 12 men's and women's tournaments in just a couple of weeks, and the Sooner Club and OU Alumni Association are sponsoring pep rallies.
The night before the Sooner women and men open play in the tournament, events are scheduled at each team's hotel for fans who make the trip. (Playing dates will be determined by seeding, and won't be finalized until the completion of the regular season). The women will be staying at the downtown Marriott, while the men will be at the Embassy Suites. "Great Expectations: Campaign for Sooner Sports" Update
Construction has begun in and around Memorial Stadium as renovations and expansion begin taking shape. Jenkins Street, east of the stadium, is now closed as crews begin work on the east-side upper-deck expansion which will be completed in time for the 2003 season. On the west side, work is progressing on the new parking garage, which will also open in time for football in 2003.
Additionally, athletic department personnel have vacated all offices in the north end zone complex as crews begin work on the transformation of the McClendon Athletic Administration Complex. Until the project's completion in late summer of this year, department staff and student life services have been moved to the stadium press box and Santee Lounge. The next issue of the Sooner Insider will provide ongoing construction photos.
Following a $600,000 gift from John Crain (see "women's soccer" page), the $100-million "Great Expectations" campaign has now surpassed the $80 million mark in donations. Contact the Sooner Club office today at (405) 325-8000 for more information on how you can contribute.
2002 Sooner Caravan
Lake Tenkiller will once again be the site for the 2002 Sooner Caravan/Jimmy Houston Bass Fishing Tournament. The fourth annual event will take place on Saturday, June 29, at first light from Elk Creek Landing at the lake. Registration, entertainment, and a pre-tournament meeting will take place at the Jimmy Houston Store in Cookson on Friday, June 28, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Cost for a two-man team is $150, and entries are already being taken through the Sooner Club office. Call (405) 325-8000 today for your entry form.
