NORMAN, Okla.— The second-ranked Oklahoma women's golf team shot a 296 (+8) in its final round of the regular season Sunday to finish in second place at the 15-team SMU Dallas Athletic Club Invitational, held at the Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas, Texas.
The Sooners battled windy conditions to finish five strokes behind Big 12 rival and 23rd-ranked Oklahoma State with a 54-hole total of 901 (+37). It marked OU's seventh top-five finish out of eight regular season tournaments this season.
“There were a lot of positives to take away from this tournament,” said OU head coach Veronique Doruin-Luttrell. “We made some putts coming in which was good. We now have a week to prepare for the Big 12's and we know what we need to do in order to be ready.”
Oklahoma was led by Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who took second place for her sixth top-10 finish of the season. The junior recorded a final-round 71 (-1) and a team-high four birdies to bring her 54-hole total to 217 (+1). She finished seven shots behind medalist Julie Yang of Oklahoma State.
Anne-Catherine Tanguay also fired a 1-under 71 in the final round to bring her three-round total to 225 (+9). The junior began the day in a tie for 20th place but climbed 13 spots on the leaderboard to finish in seventh place. It marked her ninth career top-10 showing. Jao-Javanil and Tanguay tied Louisville's Emily Haas for the lowest third-round score in the 80-competitor field.
Junior Emily Collins played Sunday's front nine at 4 over par, but battled back with three birdies and only two bogeys on the final nine holes en route to a final-round 75 (+3). Collins ended the tournament in a tie for eighth place, marking her fourth top-10 finish of the season.
Junior Kaitlyn Rohrback tied for 24th place after shooting a 79 (+7) in the third round. She posted a three-round 233 (+17).
Senior Taylor Schmidt finished the tournament in 55th place with a three-round 246 (+30).
Jacki Marshall, who competed as an individual and unattached from team scoring, shot a 234 (+18) to tie for 26th place out of 78 golfers.
The Sooners' postseason play begins April 19-21 at the Big 12 Championship, which will be hosted by Iowa State at The Harvester Golf Course in Rhodes, Iowa. OU won last year's Big 12 Championship in Lawrence, Kan, behind Jao-Javanil and Tanguay, who tied for second place and finished fourth, respectively.
