NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma rowing team earned 39 of 40 points and won eight races on the second day of the Longhorn Invitational Saturday to set up six races with rival Texas in the finals Sunday on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas.
After they won every varsity race in the first round of racing Friday, the Sooners came back to win four of their six races in the morning and
all but one race in the afternoon. All four of OU's varsity boats remained undefeated on the weekend with wins against Iowa, San Diego and Tulsa on the 2,000 meter course.
The Sooners claimed 19 of 20 points on the regatta's first day and sit in second place with 58 points, just two behind Texas' perfect total of 60. Points are awarded based on teams' finishes in the first and second varsity eight race, the varsity four and the novice eight. San Diego is third with 40 points, followed by Iowa's 39 and UCF's 21. Tulsa (13), Kansas State (9) and SMU (0) round out the Longhorn Invitational field.
OU's varsity eight won two close races against San Diego and Tulsa. The Sooners opened the day with a 6:33.2 finish against San Diego for a five second victory. In the afternoon, they crossed the line in 6:57.1 to beat Tulsa for the second time this season, nearly ten seconds faster than the Hurricane's 7:06.5.
The second varsity eight was responsible for two of Oklahoma's largest victories of the day. The crew opened with a 6:39.2, ahead of USD's 6:53.8 and closed with a 16.6-second win over Tulsa and finished in 7:11.0.
Both varsity four boats continued their hot start to the season and remained undefeated in 2013 with three wins. The varsity four raced to a 7:29.7 finish to beat San Diego before an afternoon time of 8:08.6 defeated Tulsa by 10.9 seconds. The second varsity four raced just once, but made it count with a 28.5 second win over Iowa in the morning session.
After a 7:08.5 finish put them in second place to San Diego in the morning session, the novice eight posted their first win at the Longhorn Invite with a 1.8 second win over Central Florida. The Sooners finished in 7:26.0.
While OU's varsity and novice eight boats will face Texas for the first time tomorrow, the Sooners' second novice eight raced their rivals three times in the regatta's first two days. Oklahoma finished second in all three races, but Saturday morning's contest was the closest. The Sooners posted a 7:14.7, just 3.1 seconds behind the Longhorns.
The Longhorn Invitational comes to a close Sunday with four tiers of finals. The Sooners and Longhorns square off in the top tier in all six events.
Iowa and USD meet in the second tier, followed by UCF vs. Tulsa and Kansas State vs. SMU. The competition begins at 8 a.m. CT, with the varsity eight finals at 10:30.
