Cuellar to Play in Brazil

NORMAN, Okla. -- Though 2012 is Oklahoma soccer's Renae Cuellar's final season as a Sooner, the dynamic senior forward will not be finished playing the game she loves.

A member of the Mexican national team, Cuellar will be traveling with El Tri to participate in an international tournament in Sao Paulo, Brazil, this December. Teams on the schedule for Mexico include Brazil, Denmark and Portugal.

"It's an honor each time I get to represent my country, definitely an honor," Cuellar said. "It's a great feeling to step on the field and hear your national anthem."

The Sooners' leading scorer this season with seven goals, Cuellar began her national career playing in the Under-20 Women's World Cup in 2010. She scored the game-winning goal against England, then scored again against Japan in pool play on her way to playing every minute in all four of Mexico's games.

"I am delighted for Renae," said Oklahoma Head Coach Matt Potter. "Any player will tell you that to be selected to represent your country is an honor and the pinnacle of a soccer career. Renae is having a wonderful season and this serves notice that her hard work and endeavor is being rewarded with the selection.

Since the U-20 Women's World Cup, Cuellar has also competed in Olympic qualifiers and was an alternate for the senior national team in the 2011 Women's World Cup.

"Renae has been a player I have admired for many years," Potter continued. "Having the opportunity to work with her and have her as part of our team has been nothing but a positive. We are lucky to have her and I wish her nothing but the best."
