CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 23 Sooners trailed 3-0 early on but rolled to a 14-6 win over Appalachian State to force a seventh and final game in the Charlottesville Regional on Monday.
The Sooners (41-23) and Mountaineers (41-17) will get underway at 7 p.m. CT on KOKC 1520 AM with Toby Rowland and Ross Hubbard on the call.
Matt Oberste went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and Cody Reine drove in six runs off a three-run homer, a sacrifice fly and a two-run triple. The Sooners pounded out a season high in runs as eight of the starters collected a hit and Jack Mayfield joined Reine and Oberste with a multi-RBI game with two runs driven in.
OU fell behind early as starter Damien Magnifico was unable to get out of the third inning after an error by Mayfield and two walks and two singles. The second single was given up by reliever Kindle Ladd, who recorded the save last night against Virginia.
Down 3-0, the Sooners came right back in the top of the fourth as Oberste doubled off the first pitch he saw to the gap in right-center field to plate Caleb Bushyhead (single) and Evan Mistich (hit by pitch). Oberste then came around to score on a RBI groundout by Jack Mayfield.
Appalachian State put runners on first and third with one out but Tanner Toal gunned down Hector Crespo trying to steal second base, just the third time in 33 attempts this season. The third out was recorded by OU's next reliever Steven Bruce who froze Brandon Burris on a called strike three.
Bruce improved to 2-0 with 3 2/3 middle relief innings. ASU starter Rob Marcello dropped to 6-5 with five runs (four earned) off three hits in five innings.
The game was broken open in the seventh as OU received a pair of home runs, including a three-run bomb down the right-field line by Reine. Garrett Carey followed Reine's sixth career homer (fifth at Charlottesville) in the NCAA tournament with a solo shot to left field two batters later.
