NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 24 Oklahoma ended the regular season in style on Saturday with a 13-3 win over Samford. The Sooners came back after dropping Thursday's series opener 4-2, to record a 6-2 win on Friday and then score a season-high 13 runs on Saturday.
The Sooners ended the regular season at 35-21 and finished fourth in the Big 12 standings with a 13-10 record. Samford also finished the regular season at 35-21.
Today's action moved OU into fourth place in the conference standings after Oklahoma State was swept by visiting Texas A&M. Despite starting the Big 12 slate at 0-4, the Sooners went 13-6 down the stretch in Big 12 play and posted a top-four finish in the league for the fourth straight year.
“Out of 14 weekends, we win 10,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “Out of eight weekends in the Big 12, we win five. It's been a roller coaster all year, but when you look back at the body of work, it speaks volumes for a pretty solid season and we're playing our best baseball right now. The third best RPI in the league and finishing fourth in a really tough league, I think that makes us a lock for the NCAA.”
On Saturday, the Sooners jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and had a 6-0 advantage built after the first three innings. Max White had two of his three hits in the first three innings and that gave Damien Magnifico all the run support he needed to improve to 3-1.
“We closed it out exactly the way we needed to,” said White. “We did what we needed to do to get out of this series and head into the Big 12.”
Magnifico allowed his first run in the sixth inning and then one other in the seventh, but both tallies went unearned. In his six innings pitched, the redshirt-sophomore struck out five and allowed zero earned runs off five hits and two walks.
After the Bulldogs broke up the shutout in the sixth, the OU offense went back to work with two runs in the home half of the frame and three more in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Drew Harrison tossed the final three innings for his first career save. Harrison struck out four and gave up one run off two hits and a two walks.
White paced the offense with three hits and two runs and was joined by Hunter Lockwood who hit his 10th and 11th home runs of the year. Lockwood finished with two hits and three RBI off the bench. His first home run, a solo shot to dead center field, cleared the wall by 10 feet.
“Our hitting ability hasn't shown throughout the season,” said Lockwood. “We're a lot better hitting team than we've shown. We just have to put it all together.”
Besides White and Lockwood, OU saw production out of the seniors who were honored before their final home game. Seniors Caleb Bushyhead, Erik Ross and Evan Mistich all had two hits while fellow classmates Cody Reine scored three runs and Tanner Toal logged three walks.
“I've never had a senior game where all five seniors started and that's what we had today,” added Golloway. “It was pretty special. It's been a weird year. The stars just lined up.”
The Sooners make their 22nd straight appearance in the conference tournament with the start of the 2012 Big 12 Championship on Wednesday, May 23 at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in downtown Oklahoma City. Seeded fourth, OU will play the fifth seed Oklahoma State in the first round.
“You have to playing your best and you have to beat the best if you want to win a conference tournament or a regional,” said Golloway. “It's always fun to play a Bedlam game and it's especially fun in the Big 12 tournament, when even more is on the line.”
