OKLAHOMA CITY -- Garrett Carey saved his first home run of the season for the ninth inning of the first game of the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday as the No. 25 Sooners topped the Cowboys 1-0 in dramatic fashion.
“I got an inside pitch that I could handle,” said Carey. “Luckily my barrel found the ball and the rest is history.”
The win improved OU to 36-21 overall and moved the Sooners into the winner's bracket where they will face the winner of No. 1 seed Baylor and No. 8 Kansas State at 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
Wednesday's game also helped avenge three losses recorded earlier in the year to the rival Cowboys (32-24). It marked OU's first shutout recorded in the Big 12 tournament and the first in a conference tournament since 1991 (5-0 over Missouri in Big Eight Championship).
Carey led off the ninth inning with the walk-off blast and ended a streak of 16 consecutive scoreless innings by OSU's Andrew Heaney (8-2). Heaney tossed a complete game shutout over the Sooners in the series opener in Tulsa and suffered his second loss of the year on Wednesday morning.
“I am really excited for our players, and what an exciting game,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “We need to compliment Oklahoma State and Andrew Heaney and the way he pitched. He goes nine innings in Tulsa and shuts us out and goes eight there and shuts us out. He is arguably one of the best left handed pitches I've seen.”
OU starter Dillon Overton matched Heaney as the pitcher's duel featured eight strikeouts from each left hander. Overton lasted 7 1/3 innings before being relieved by Steven Okert, who was credited with the win after 1 1/2 shutout innings. Okert followed Overton's career-high eight strikeouts with two of his own and improved to 7-6.
Carey had one of the Sooners' three hits as Max White had the first hit for either in the fourth inning. Erik Ross singled up the middle in the sixth inning.
“Garrett Carey is a guy that has struggled at the plate but the best thing he as done is stay tough all year and to continue to make adjustments at the plate,” added Golloway. “He buys in and never questions what we ask him to do and when the ball left the yard that is when I told him.”
The Cowboys threatened with two hits in the fifth inning, seventh inning and eighth but couldn't scratch a run across on the Sooners, which posted their seventh shutout of the season and first over Oklahoma State since Jack Mayfield's complete game victory in the 2010 series finale.
Mayfield helped keep OSU off the board on Wednesday as well with a nifty double play ball in the seventh inning. The play saw the second baseman dive to his right to snag a potential single up the middle and flip the ball with his glove to shortstop Caleb Bushyhead.
